Private schools on the Northshore: the St. Tammany ladder from pre-K to 12

21 approved schools in Covington, Mandeville, Abita Springs and Slidell, grouped the way families use them, with Northshore-specific funding notes.

St. Tammany Parish has 21 BESE-approved nonpublic schools, the most of any parish outside Orleans and Jefferson, and they form a complete ladder: parish and independent elementary schools, four Catholic high schools, and three schools that run from pre-K through 12th grade. Most Northshore families never consider a school across the Causeway, so this guide stays on the north side of the lake.

Pre-K through 12 on one campus

Northlake Christian School (Covington, 1,057 students), Christ Episcopal School (Covington, 597 students), First Baptist Christian School (Slidell, 290 students), Lakeside Christian Academy (Slidell, 0 students). These schools skip the 7th-to-8th transition entirely, which some families prefer; they also take new students at 8 and 9.

Northshore funding notes

  • Parish school tuition is closer to the award. Covington, Mandeville and Slidell parish schools at the parishioner rate sit nearer the $7,626 level than Orleans or Metairie schools do, so a qualifying family can get close to zero with an STO award.
  • The four Catholic high schools split by sex and town. St. Paul's (boys) and St. Scholastica (girls) in Covington, Hannan (coed) off Highway 1077, Pope John Paul II (coed) in Slidell. Families in Mandeville commute either direction.
  • Washington Parish and Bogalusa families often look to Slidell or Covington; Ben's Ford Christian, Bowling Green and Annunciation are the approved options at home.
  • Slidell is its own market. Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Margaret Mary, Pope John Paul II, First Baptist Christian and Lakeside Christian serve east St. Tammany, and Lake Castle Slidell is not BESE-approved.
